Tesco
Worldpay helps U.K.’s largest supermarket chain quickly pivot to provide prepay capabilities.
Empowering individuals and communities through innovation and collaboration
The fast-evolving new reality unfolding around the globe in the early spring of 2020 left many individuals ─ especially those at high risk ─ reliant on family, friends or volunteers to purchase groceries and other essentials on their behalf. Remotely prepaying a support network was a challenge needing a speedy, secure solution.
Tesco, the U.K.’s largest supermarket chain and one of the globe’s leading retailers, approached Worldpay, their long-standing payments partner, to develop a contactless e-gift card that could be purchased online and sent to a designated personal shopper in real time for use at Tesco locations for payment.
Trusted partners quickly work together
Worldpay quickly assembled an internal task force and implementation team to bring this concept to life. The company then worked closely with Tesco to develop the payment functions required by the e-gift card, utilizing the Worldpay Gateway, and together got this secure and easy payment method up and running all within three weeks and on budget.
Launched in May 2020, Tesco's new e-gift card program allowed customers in need ─ including the elderly, vulnerable and self-isolating ─ to purchase the cards online and email them to those making purchases on their behalf in Tesco stores. They could also check their balances and keep track of their grocery spending online.
FraudSight added for smarter protection
The e-gift card proved a great success with significant uptake ─ a phenomenal achievement and testament to the productive partnership between Tesco and Worldpay. That September, Tesco expanded the offering for general use to the U.K. public.
One of the key success criteria was to have a robust fraud defense. Tesco selected FraudSight, Worldpay’s multilayered solution that uses machine learning technology to monitor transactions in real time during the authorization process and predicts fraud more accurately.
Worldpay worked with Tesco to customize rules for fraud detection and updated their FraudSight offering to match the new requirements. The implementation was tailored to provide optimum performance and maximum protection, without affecting the customer experience. Once again, delivery was rapidly completed in three weeks.
